No appeal: court snagged between Hong Kong and China

Article Abstract:

THe future of the rule of law in Hong Kong is again in doubt as the colony's Legislative Council remains opposed to the colonial govt's proposed Court of Final Appeal. The court was originally to be the supreme arbiter of Hong Kong laws, and the Basic Law stipulated that two or more of its five judges could be from overseas. China and Britain subsequently agreed to a maximum of one, and China still has reservations. The Hong Kong legislators want the court as described in the Basic Law, but China threatens to invalidate such a move.

A woman's place

Article Abstract:

Women have begun to take a prominent role in Hong Kong politics thanks largely to the efforts of Legislative Council members Christine Loh, Anna Wu, and Emily Lau. They have actively promoted pro-democracy agendas since their appointment or election to the body, but some observers say they are out of touch with other women who do not have successful careers or advanced degrees. Nonetheless they are highly popular with the electorate, though far less so with the pro-Beijing groups spreading throughout Hong Kong.

Karate chopped: director takes a dim view of local film-industry trends

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong film director Ann Hui is receiving critical praise for 'Summer Snow,' her first critical success since 'Boat People' in 1982. Hui's movies, which tend to be quiet and introspective, became less popular in Asia once the martial arts film became hugely popular in the 1980s. Since the rise of karate flicks, Hui has seen a trend in the industry towards profit-driven, low budget action films, which disappoints her.
