No assurance: foreign insurance firms find South Korea tough going

Foreign insurance companies continue to have difficulty gaining access to South Korea's $6.2 billion life insurance market despite a 1988 agreement with the US to allow freer foreign competition in South Korea. Foreign insurers have entered into six major joint ventures with South Korean firms, but poor performance of all but one is prompting the foreign companies to consider withdrawing. The increase in the number of South Korean companies to 32, the lack of professional sales personnel and discrimination have frustrated the foreigners' efforts to compete in South Korea.

The going gets tough: strong New Zealand dollar worries exporters

New Zealand's strong dollar is forcing the country's manufacturers to cut costs and look beyond Australia in their overseas expansion plans. The NZ dollar has risen 5% against the US dollar and 10% against the Australian since Jan 1995, and some forecasts call for the 8.5% growth in exports of the past two years to decline to 3.5% for the year ending Mar 31. Some 70% of companies may also have been relying on fleeting cost advantages. However, investment at home and overseas remains strong, thanks to relaxed rules.
