No more Dutch sandwiches

Article Abstract:

Changes in the US-Netherlands tax treaty will force companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore to reorganize the legal ownership of their US holdings and deprive them of the tax benefits enjoyed by their Dutch holdings mainly because their governments have never signed a tax treaty with the US The changes will include a withdrawal of tax privileges from firms using Dutch holding companies and will not be effective until 1994 or 1995. Such firms were set up to take advantage of a provision in the treaty that allowed US-based subsidiaries to be exempt from a withholding tax.

No venture, no gain

Article Abstract:

Xiamen, located in China's Fujian province, has never been considered as a model special economic zone. The area suffers from a conservative administration that does not accord priority to foreign investment and trade. The authorities, however, seems to have changed their minds in an effort to catch up with the country's economic reform policy. There have been enthusiastic responses from the local press and citizens about the prospect of direct sea and air connections with Taiwan.
