No more Mr. Nice Guy: Taiwan speculators irritate Malaysians

Article Abstract:

Malaysian hosts to Taiwan's companies are beginning to feel disgust over Taiwanese speculators' bullish practice of using financial means to get their ends. One good example for this was the recently concluded 1991 state by-election in Penang fought between the PM Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad's ruling party and Chinese Democratic Action Party. The ruling party lost because otherwise supportive ethnic Chinese voterswere forced to leave their residences in Chai Leng Park when Taiwanese speculators raised the rents of their houses. This was further aggravated when the speculators resold their investments after the election.

Power and the glory

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian government's decision to float M$3 billion worth of public shares of electric company Tenaga Nasional (Tenaga), coming at the heels of the listing of national car maker Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Proton) on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange on Mar 26, 1992, threatens to disrupt trading at the stock market. No listing date has been announced for Tenaga, but both flotations have already attracted foreign funds. Notwithstanding foreign investment inflows, critics fear that the politically motivated decision to privatize will unnecessarily stretch an already thin local stock market.
