On Choosing Horses Or Courses

Article Abstract:

Businesses requiring electronic spreadsheets have a number of decisions to make before purchasing a package. First they must choose from the variety of spreadsheet programs available, also giving consideration to which program is best suited to their machine. Evaluations of a number of these spreadsheet packages and their usability on different hardware are provided. Those featured include Beebcalc, Visicalc, the Apple IIe and the IBM PC. Systems that include spreadsheets, database, word processing capabilities and graphic facilities integrated into one package such as Lotus 1-2-3, Lisa and Visi-On are indicated as the future trend in electronic spreadsheets.

Cash flow projections with exhibit examples are set up using VisiCalc. The importance of good cash flow information from credit sales is emphasized. Safety checks are built into the exhibited schedules. Helpful information is given for setting up VisiCalc using credit sales to predict cash flow.

What If...We Use Indices to Make Changes?

Article Abstract:

The author describes a method of using indices to examine what-if assumptions on a spreadsheet, in this case Visicalc. The advantage of using index numbers to make what-if changes, instead of changing the actual variables, is that the original assumptions can be easily restored.
