The KMT has staying power on Taiwan

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's ruling Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang, has sufficiently adjusted to the country's political and social realities, making it likely that it will continue to dominate the political scene. On the other hand, its main rival, the Democratic Progressive Party, has failed to grasp local politics and remains mired in its social activism. Taiwanese politics is also undergoing changes as it shifts from ethnic to all-inclusive politics. The 1997 elections, the gubernatorial and parliamentary polls in 1998 and the presidential race in 2000 are expected to reflect these trends.
