Giordano still vulnerable

Article Abstract:

Giordano International Ltd.'s stock shares are expected to fall further if the company fails to produce positive feedback on its China venture. Giordano's shares plunged 22% on Jan. 17, 1997, prompting the company to request the HongKong Stock Exchange to suspend trading for its shares. Investors believe Giordano's prospects in China are particularly important, because that is where most growth would come from. The Hong Kong-based clothing retailer, however, still encounters problems long after its founder, publishing magnate Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, criticized Chinese Premier Li Peng in print.

McDonald's cooks up success in Hong Kong: fast-food giant finds cheap prices, adaptability bring in high volume

Article Abstract:

McDonald's success in Hong Kong is attributed to its ability to adapt to local cultures. Management was given to a Chinese chemical engineer, Daniel Ng, instead of the usual American executives. Promotion also plays a role in the fastfood chain's success as the launching of the Hello Kitty and Snoopy dolls resulted in massive queues. Another contributing factor is cheap prices despite the fact that Hong Kong is one of the most expensive markets in the world.
