No more peso?

Article Abstract:

Argentina has indicated that it is considering abandoning the peso in favour of the US dollar. This is presumably because the government believes that the country's currency regime is not completely credible. Full currency union would boost the credibility of the government's commitment not to devalue, but would not resolve all the difficulties associated with the choice of exchange-rage regime. It is possible to raise doubts about whether even a currency union can ever be totally credible. Argentina would still be able to recreate its central bank and revive the peso if automatic adjustment led to a serious recession, but this would be very expensive.

Menem's final days

Article Abstract:

Argentina has strengthened its economy during the ten years that Carlos Menem has been president. Inflation has been controlled, helped by the introduction of the currency board, large parts of the economy have been modernized and privatized, and there has been growth, though it has been erratic. Democracy is also stronger in Argentina, though Menem is seeing a decline in his power. Presidential candidates need to be aware of the concerns of investors over the currency. There are also concerns about fiscal reform and structural policy.

Brazil: privatisation trundles ahead

Article Abstract:

Brazil's efforts at privatising state companies have been methodical at best, but they nevertheless have netted the government $12 billion. Very few foreign countries had been among those buying up the available state companies, but that has begun to change in 1996 as more companies are sold.
