Thailand's premier, Chalavit Yongchaiyudh, suddenly announced his intention to resign on 6 November 1997. The Thai business community was pleased by his decision and the Bangkok stock market rose following the news. The six partners in Thailand's coalition government have been trying to appoint a new leader as quickly as possible and all government activity has stopped. The International Monetary Fund is due to assess Thailand's adherence to the conditions which were attached to a $17 billion loan and this political instability may adversely affect investor's confidence.

People's Putsch: the Thai army sides with the people to force reluctant politicians to accept a new draft constitution and boost confidence in the economy

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh of Thailand agreed to accept the new constitution under pressure from military and business leaders, and this has had positive economic repercussions, with the value of baht strengthening against the US dollar. However parliamentary democracy has suffered and there is concern that the intervention was accepted by the people. The draft charter includes changes to the political system to encourage honesty amongst politicians and promote transparency, and recognition of the right to assembly.

Thaksin Shinawatra is stepping down as Thailand's foreign minister after only three months on the job but he expects to remain in politics and may seek an elected position soon. The former head of telecommunications firm Shinawatra Computers & Communications Group, he is personally worth some 60 million baht. Complaining of the leisurely pace of most diplomats, he is leaving his post because of a rule in Thailand's new constitution. Observers rate his political chances as fair.
