No real winners

Article Abstract:

The Cambodian people are preparing for a situation in which no party will emerge as a clear winner in the Jul 26 1998 election. The ensuing power struggle is likely to be violent and people are leaving the cities and closing shops which could be subject to looting. Opposition parties appear to have popular support, even though this may not be voiced due to fear, but ruling Cambodian People's Party Leader Hun Sen is unlikely to surrender power. Diplomats are trying to engineer a coalition, but the main political challengers would not work with Hun Sen, who is accused of murdering colleagues.

Shut out: government critic expelled from parliament

Article Abstract:

The Cambodian govt's expulsion of MP Sam Rainsy from Parliament on June 22, 1995, sounded the death knell for democracy in that nation and imperils the foreign aid it depends on, say observers. The govt has in recent months shown little tolerance for dissent or opposition, and Rainsy, one of the country's most popular politicians, routinely challenged it. The move comes at a time of tighter international aid in general, with many donors seeking places to cut funds, and this event moves Cambodia to the top of the list.
