No time for a siesta

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming merger of Banco Santander and Banco Central Hispanoamericano will form BSCH, which will be one of Europe's top ten leading banks. The possibility that newly-formed BSCH then merges with Sam Paolo/IMI indicates the urgency of consolidation in Spain's financial services market, where banks are small by European standards. The pressure is on Spain's small banks to find partners who will help them compete on a European scale.

Financial communications play a vital role in the global communications industry, which is valued at over $25 billion in 1998.

Buyout backers begin to cash in

Article Abstract:

The flotation of Spanish supermarket chain Superdiplo, backed by private equity, provides concrete evidence that Spain's buyout market has considerable potential. Financial institutions, faced with low interest rates and excess liquidity, are seeking alternative assets to the 3-4% return on government bonds. Several funds raised over the past 12 months provide further evidence of domestic institutional interest.
