Robb's last stand

Article Abstract:

Democrat, Charles Robb is seeking a third term as in the Senate, representing Virginia. he defeated Oliver North, Republican, in 1994, and his new opponent is George Allen. Allen appears to support gun control which could alarm the gun lobby of Virginia which has supported Allen and which is politically powerful. Allen faces a dilemma in that he does not wish to offend long-term Republican voters, or those who could swing to the Republicans. Robb faces a move toward the Republicans that has affected other Democrats holding office statewide.

The costliest race in the world

Article Abstract:

Texas governor, George W. Bush, has raised $37 million and could raise $70 million in total by the end of the campaign. This is far more than has been raised in previous elections. Money does not guarantee electoral victory and Bill Clinton defeated Bob Dole in a previous election despite having raised less money. There is concern that the large sums raised could affect electroal campaigns by becoming a benchmark. There are plans for reform of campaign finance, but they are unlikely to be passed rapidly enough to have much impact.
