News of covert sales of British arms to Iraq will not damage the political reputations of prime minister John Major or the Conservative party. The sales were justifiable at the time, since Iraq served to balance out the military threat of Iran.

Scandal hits fan: arms for Iraq

Article Abstract:

British machine tool companies allegedly sold equipment to Iraq with the knowledge that they could be used to manufacture arms. A case was recently brought against Matrix-Churchill Corp, but later dropped because of inconsistent evidence.

The US, France and Britain declared on Aug 26, 1992 that no Iraqi fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters would be allowed to fly below the 32nd parallel. The decision is part of a wider strategy to undermine Saddam Hussein.
