Not-so-fine print: Nafta's details may exclude Asian traders

Article Abstract:

The provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement are focused on confining the benefits of trade transactions within the boundaries of Mexico, US and Canada. The agreement, which was inked on Sep 8, 1992, allows for the unrestricted movement of services and goods among the three signatory nations for a period of 15 years starting Jan 1, 1994. Among others, the agreement establishes the content criteria for products that will be produced and traded by the three concerned countries. Caught in the crossfire

Article Abstract:

The US Treasury has charged China and Taiwan of manipulating their respective exchange rates to help minimize their countries' trade deficits. These charges come as a surprise to other East Asian nations since if true, the imbalance will ultimately reflect as losses to all exporting countries. Chinese and Taiwanese banking officials have denied the accusations, insisting that the exchange rates have remained normal.
