Article Abstract:

The new Building 16 currently being constructed by the BRE at Watford, England, is a prime example of passive design strategy. It will combine office and seminar space, and will total 2,000 sq mt. The main aspects of passive design are natural ventilation, sunshading, thermal mass and passive cooling, lighting and acoustics and active heating and cooling. The south face will be clad, but the other faces are mostly second-hand brick. The bricks are mainly being laid in cement mortar as they have an important structural role.

Architects and services engineers must increasingly co-operate to achieve environmental quality in design, and the CIBSE annual conference has become more relevant to architectural design. Offices need to be more effective for occupiers as they develop, requiring four types of space, hives, cells, clubs and dens, which relate to each other in different ways. New developments in the CIBSE conference papers include cold radiators, weather forecasting and desiccant cooling.
