Nuclear welfare: can Tahiti survive the end of French testing?

Article Abstract:

France's nuclear testing program helped spark riots in Tahiti, but it also indirectly supports much of the island's population, a situation the Pact de Progres seeks to change. The plan, adopted in 1993, calls for a smaller govt and higher taxes (currently 2% of income), possible pay cuts for the 23,000 civil servants, and making tourism and agriculture, fishing, and forestry pay 50% of the GDP rather than the present 30%. A socialist compact requiring employers to pay at least $1,000 a month contributes to 15% unemployment.

Birds of a feather: joint venture buoys Pacific carriers

Article Abstract:

An apparently profitable joint leasing agreement between Air Pacific and Royal Tongan Airlines may point the way to survival for other South Pacific national carriers. The two airlines share a leased jet because scheduling worked out well, but other members of the Assn of South Pacific Airlines are exploring seat-purchasing arrangements. That sort of deal got Royal Tongan in trouble in 1994, when Polynesian Airlines abruptly cut back on its service. Most of the region's national carriers lost money in 1994.
