The latest shock

Article Abstract:

Petroleum prices have risen after a meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Mar 1999, when production cuts were agreed on. A new meeting is planned for Sep 1999. The recovery of Asian economies puts upwards pressure on prices, as does US economic growth. The US was concerned about the impact of low petroleum prices on Russia and Venezuela, and may have put pressure on OPEC to agree to production cuts. Speculation has also helped push up petroleum prices.
