Dotty about dot commerce

Article Abstract:

There is a fashion for internet stocks which has affected Japan and Europe as well as the US. There has been rapid growth in electronic commerce, though there have been problems with deliveries. Books sales and stockbroking are growth areas among retail sales, and there has also been rapid growth in business-to-business web exchanges. There is concern about high valuations for internet stocks, and about what could occur when the bubble bursts. Companies cannot ignore the internet, and need to do more that add websites to their activities.

We're off to the online mall

Article Abstract:

The impact of the internet on traditional commerce can be shown by the case of Encyclopaedia Britannica, which had a sales force of 2,300 and sales revenues of 650 million US dollars by 1989. Microsoft's Encarta encyclopaedia was issued in 1993, and Encylclopaedia Britannica brought out its own CD-ROM version in response to this. Sales dropped, and the company has less than 350 employees. Companies that cannot accept change and respond will find that others will force change on them.

The real Internet revolution

Article Abstract:

The Internet was once seen as a threat to conventional retailers, but this has changed, and integrated shopping is seen as they key trend for retailers. Competition has hit online retailers who have had to reduce prices while costs have risen. Multi-channel rivals have some cost advantages in terms of marketing. Large retailers also benefit from their buying power, and established retailers benefit from brand loyalty. A combination of physical and online retailing may involve marrying different cultures, and there are still questions as to how they can best be integrated.
