Off to work

Article Abstract:

Women account for 45% of the labor force in the United Kingdom, compared to 36% in 1971, and over two thirds of women who are of the age to work are in employment. Women still have to take most responsibility for running households, and caring for the aged and children, and their earnings are affected. This also affects their ability to saving for a pension and to receive contributory benefits. Measures to help women include tax credits for child care, though critics argue that women are being forced to do paid work with the state helping pay for child care, and that women's work as carers is not encouraged by this move.

The strange case of Karl and Adolf

Article Abstract:

Karl Marx forecast a worsening economic position for the working class, yet they have prospered within the US and Europe, and a new middle class has grown between the workers and the capitalists. Marxism became important in China and Russia, rather than in industrial economies that did not develop precisely in ways forecast by Marx. Meanwhile, Mussolini invented fascism in Italy and Hitler developed the idea in Germany, offering order, nationalism, leadership and asking for faith. Some of the ideas of fascists were used in Portugal and Spain.
