Oil's well that ends well

Article Abstract:

British Petroleum has announced a merger with Amoco, at a time when petroleum prices are dropping. There is scope for cutting costs. The new company will also rank among the largest world petroleum companies, alongside Royal Dutch/Shell, and Exxon. Petroleum prices do not look set to rise over the short term due to depressed demand in Asia, nd record levels of stocks of petroleum. The merger will make the new company better able to tackle this problem as well as the need for geographic diversification of its petroleum fields.
