Asia's crowded cities must look up to find more space

Article Abstract:

Urban planners in Asia are looking to Hong Kong as a model for other cities, particularly in the use of high-rise buildings. As the population of Asia increases dramatically over the next 25 years, planners must find ways of increasing density in the cities to control the effects of urban sprawl.

Hong Kong may go on a space odyssey

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong area of Tamar is scheduled to be revitalized and transformed into a waterside promenade and urban park by 2007, paving the way for other Asian cities to create public spaces. However, development plans are not finalized, and urban planners worry that the city may sell the valuable land for profit.

Old Shanghai estates yield to wrecking ball; young preservationists are striving to rescue some historic sites

Article Abstract:

Chinese students and supporters of stately European architecture in Shanghai have difficulty in calling for historic preservation and slower city development since they are not allowed to organize and have no real media outlets. Some city officials agree that preservation of some older buildings in the city could lead to more tourism.
