On a wing and a prayer

Article Abstract:

The major world banks appeared to show their resilience in the crisis of fall 1998, but this view is too optimistic. US banks appear to be strong, having recovered from the early 1990s recession and benefiting from economic growth and deregulation. European banks show more variety and have been more exposed to emerging markets, but there is still optimism about their performance. Japanese banks appear to be emerging from their bad debt problems. However, banks world wide face increased competition and are seeking to cut costs or move into new areas. They are also lending to more risky borrowers, and may not be compensated for taking on the extra risk.

Japan's long winter

Article Abstract:

Japanese banks have been hit by the consequences of indiscriminate lending. the government has provided aid to strengthen the banks' capital, and there have been fewer bankruptcies, which should help ease the bad debt problem, but the problem persists. Banks have also been slow to merge, and even if they did, there are limits to the extent that they can cut costs. They need to invest more in new technology to improve their service. The banks face intense competition which affects revenue and margins. The closure of banks could lead to companies having to close, since much bad debt has not been written off.
