On the crest of a wave

Article Abstract:

Southampton, UK, may be renowned as a major port for yachts and and cruise liners, but it also has a growing financial services industry including an increasing number of accounting and law companies. However the city does not have any brokers or merchant banks and only one venture capital firm, 3i. Southampton is relatively near to London and in the past the financial services sector has suffered deal leakage to London, but the Southampton market is now becoming more independent of London. The general economy of the South is now improving, with many firms now cautiously optimistic.

'Did you sleep with your boss?...' (an assessment of the reasons why there are so few women in senior positions in the merger and acquisition field) (includes related articles)

Article Abstract:

Despite the numbers of highly qualified women leaving university and their success in fields such as law and accountancy, there are few women with senior jobs in the merger and acquisitions (M&A) industry. Figures from the British Bankers' Association show that 64% of all staff in high street banking groups were women in 1994, but few reach management grade. It is thought that some women are discouraged by corporate banking's aggressive image, while there is still resistance to a woman leading an M&A deal. Tips for women wanting to enter M&A are included.

Southampton: the first port of call

Article Abstract:

The UK port of Southampton boasts a thriving corporate finance sector in 1998, helped by the growing commercial sector in the area. The 2,597 million pounds sterling acquisition of Southern Electric by Scottish Hydro-Electric was the largest Southampton-based deal during the first nine months of 1998. Venture capital firm 3i is one of the main players in the Southampton market, concentrating on deals in the region and the occasional Channel Island transaction.
