Maria Torok

Article Abstract:

Psychoanalyst Maria Torok studied psychology and Rorschach in Paris, France, having emigrated there from Budapest, Hungary, in 1947. She worked as a child psychologist, and then trained with the Paris Psychoanalytical Society. She met Nicolas Abraham in 1950, and with him undertook a renewal of psychoanalysis. Most of their work deals with how to understand the devastation of trauma. Following Abraham's death, she formulated the view that some of Freud's theories may have been based in his family's suppressed history.

On top of the world

Article Abstract:

The Arctic is an area where science, defense, adventure and petroleum have become important, rather than gold, salmon and timber, important in the days of Jack London. The people of the Arctic are ancient, in contrast to Antarctica where the continent has more recently been discovered. Change brings racism and pollution to the Arctic. Contaminated meat and alcohol represent health dangers, and the life expectancy of the Inuits in Canada is 20 years less than the average for the nation.

Human facial tolerance to steering wheel impact: a biomechanical study

Article Abstract:

Facial injury intensity is reduced when interface force at the impact site is less than 1525N. Cadavers were used to determine the chances of facial fractures being caused due to collisions with the spoke-rim junctions of steering wheels at speeds of 1.4-6.9 m/s. The zygoma, orbit, and maxilla suffered fractures. High impact velocity caused the spread of fractures to contralateral areas while low velocity impact caused minimized unilateral fractures.
