One big headache

Article Abstract:

The decision by German chemicals concern Bayer to suspend plans to invest in a $1.5 billion tuleme diisocynate facility in Taiwan will have a negative impact on the Taiwanese government's efforts to establish the country as a centre for regional manufacturing. Bayer faced considerable local opposition to its plans, and has now decided to use an alternative site in Texas. It regarded Taiwan as its regional base in Asia, but now feels that it will not be able to establish a viable regional operations centre there.

Looking for a substitute: Taiwan Sugar develops land to sweeten bottom line

Article Abstract:

Diversification has helped Taiwan Sugar Corp, a state-owned monopoly, to boost its profits, and will proceed more aggressively as the government liberalizes sugar imports and kills sugar-cane subsidies. Sugar exports provided up to two-thirds of Taiwan's foreign exchange earnings in the 1960s, but yield just 0.001% in 1996, and will account for less than a third of Taisugar's earnings by 2000. A vast land reservoir will buoy the company, though, helping it to remain one of Taiwan's most profitable.

Dividing line

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's Ministry of Transport and Communications plans a high-speed railway from Taipei to Kaohsiung that supporters describe as essential for an efficient society. However, several problems are delaying the project, including land-acquisition, special legislation for funding and lawmakers doubting whether the project's benefits would outweigh its costs. A train system has yet to be chosen but France's Train a Grande Vitesse has worked the hardest to win the contract.
