World of meaning

Article Abstract:

The idea that buildings have meaning is valid. Post-modernist architecture resulted from the theory that ordinary buildings have meaning but has become debased. Nevertheless the idea of meaning is worth exploring. The artist Rene Magritte explored the nature of meaning in his paintings and philosophers study it under the name of 'intentional reality.' Buildings are interpreted against the intentional realm and the failure of the debased modern buildings is due to the attempt to use architecture as an abstract science. This in turn has led to attempts to escape abstraction by substituting nostalgia.

General hospitals' final act?

Article Abstract:

The Conquest Hospital, Hastings, England may be the last manifestation of the traditional general hospital design in England. Designed by Powell Moya Partnership, the hospital is situated on a sloping site and makes use of the site with a low-rise, stepped building. Natural light and heating are maximised and the hospital features courtyards and acccess to the exterior from every level. The building is praised by users but presents problems for security and visitors. It represents a compromise between a medical factory and a caring, domestic type building.
