One stitch at a time: garment-making in China tests Hanjoo boss

Article Abstract:

Garment maker Hanjoo Corp of South Korea has had mixed success with its China operation, Qingdao Hanjoo Textile Co. Local manager Lee Jeon Ho freely admits that despite intensive preparation beforehand, his two years have been one long education in management, Chinese laws and regulations, and differences in culture and work ethic. Employees reluctant to work overtime made it hard to meet rising quotas until he instituted a more flexible production scheme. Soaring salaries and poaching among other South Korean operations still cause problems.

Going global

Article Abstract:

The large industrial groups or chaebol of South Korea began aggressively expanding overseas in 1994, most notably in Europe and China, in response to the allure of foreign markets and various pressures at home. Spending on overseas projects doubled in 1994 and will rise some 70% more in 1995, though new rules from Seoul may reduce expansion by making debt more expensive. Samsung gets high marks for its management structure and pace of investment in Europe, though Daewoo and others worry analysts with the rate of their overseas expansion.

Offshore imperatives

Article Abstract:

South Korea's Daewoo Securities is aggressively expanding overseas as liberalization at home increases competition, though its hefty market share and margins there are not yet threatened. This year it has opened a joint-venture brokerage, CRB-Daewoo Securities, in India, and will launch a Shanghai office. Several operations in Vietnam could help that country become the base for its Indochina operations, and it runs Magyar Daewoo Securities in Budapest, Hungary.
