One world, few airlines

Article Abstract:

Airlines are setting up global alliances and this could represent a move toward global consolidation. Airlines were previously state owned and regulated, and they may never achieve a period of competition. Limits curbing foreign ownership are a type of protectionism and prevent pan-national groups from being set up. Alliances are a way of overcoming these restrictions. Customers do not benefit from alliances as much as airlines. Alliances raise barriers to entry, permit collusion between airlines, and allow weaker airlines to be protected. Antitrust laws should be applied to airlines.
