Opel chases VW in race to claim the best-selling car in Europe

Article Abstract:

Opel AG is disputing Volkswagen AG's claim that its Golf was the most popular selling car in Western Europe for 1999, stating that the Opel Astra takes this title. The Astra had steadily been catching up to the Golf's sales during the year, but most analysts believe that the Golf retained higher sales.

Western Europe's car sales rise

Article Abstract:

Asian auto makers see greater share of overall increase in Western European car sales than many of its U.S. and European-based rivals. Weak demand in Germany is especially troubling for Volkswagen A.G., which has seen a reduction of market share in its home country despite expectations that its redesigned Golf model would boost earnings.
