Open for business: Vietnam's economy gets big lift from Taiwanese

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese investors are already fully operating companies in Vietnam despite the US trade embargo still in force, and Japanese and European investors still hesitant. Ching Shing Textile, for example, got its investment licence in early 1991, then brought in $1 million worth of factory equipment in a small factory building in nearby Ho ChiMinh City. After training 400 workers, production of underwear and poloshirts went up for export to Japan and Taiwan. This is just one of the 70 investment licenses acquired by Taiwan which accounts for 1/4 of the total foreign investments.

Helping Hanoi: Singapore expands its role in Vietnam

Article Abstract:

Singapore has now become Vietnam's largest trading partner with two-way trade reaching $1.4 billion in 1992. The island-nation hasalso become one of Vietnam's most important sources of foreign investment. Singapore investors are attracted by Vietnam's largely untapped market, its cheap labor and economic potential. However, Singaporean companies often encounter problems with Vietnam's often-maddening bureaucracy, poorly developedlegal system and ever-changing regulations.
