Opportunism knocks

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Education Minister Najib Razak could play a key role in determining the outcome of any power struggle between Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and his deputy Anwar Ibrahim. He has a considerable amount of support within the United Malays National Organization, and has risen steadily through party and government ranks since becoming a member of parliament at the age of 22. He has shown considerable caution, always supporting the politicians and policies most likely to be successful. Some observers have criticized this stance.

New convictions: Islamic groups run into government opposition

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's government cracked down in Apr 1996 on members of the outlawed Al-Arqam Islamic movement and seems concerned about a possible spread of militant Islamic fundamentalism. The spread of Shia theology, with its close links to Iran, is part of the problem, as is the political destabilization that could accompany a shift in the country's Islamic faith. The government, which is tracking some 48 Islamic groups, arrested the 18 Al-Arqam members six months before important party elections, suggesting political overtones.

Close encounter: Muslim leader denies violating religious law

Article Abstract:

The deputy chief of the youth wing of Pas, Malaysia's opposition Islamic party, has been arrested for violation of religious law by committing khalwat, or close proximity, with a married woman. Mohamed Sabu's case will be heard of Feb 14 in Kota Baru's religious court. It will probably not hurt Pas significantly, but will complicate Mohamed's own campaign and help the ruling United Malays National Organization to defend its own rejection of religious, or sharia, laws. Mohamed claims he was set up.
