Opportunities in ASEAN catch Washington's eye

Article Abstract:

Thirty-two billion dollars worth of US exports were marketed to Assn. of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) members in 1994. Cognizant of the region's potential as a major importer of US products, the Dept. of Commerce is conducting an in-depth study on the ASEAN market. The ASEAN region is expected to become a bigger importer of US products than China and India combined. However, the US has yet to adopt a strategy to surpass Japan's success in penetrating ASEAN. Japan remains a dominant player in automobile and electronics exports.
