S&M whips rivals as Norton rises

Article Abstract:

A total of 74 deals valued at 65,194 million pounds sterling has given mergers and acquisition law firm Slaughter and May the top position in both the UK league tables of advisers by volume and by value during 1999. One of the best performing firms was Norton Rose which advised on $29 billion pounds sterling worth of deals, covering 34 transactions.

Orange deal lands victory in Europe for Freshfields

Article Abstract:

Law firm Freshfields advised on the completion of 151 merger and acquisition deals worth $293 billion in the period Jan 1999 to Dec 1999. The firm was successful in exploiting its close investment banking connections, especially with Morgan Stanley. Its strongest franchise is in the UK, where it had mandates to advise Siebe, British Aerospace and Zeneca. Second place was held by Linklaters & Alliance, which advised on 167 deals worth $268 billion.

Britain's top-ranking law firms offering public company advisory services have changed since Aug, 1996. The legal partnership of Linklaters and Paines remains in first place, having achieved 18 deals valuing a total of 5,937 million pounds during the first half of 1997. However, firms Ashurst Morris Crisp and Clifford Chance have beaten Slaughter and May and Freshfields to second and third place in the tables. They achieved deals worth combined totals of 5,463 and 4,363 million pounds sterling respectively during the same period.
