Organic - the healthy option

Article Abstract:

The Navy believes that organic airborne mine countermeasure (AMCM) capability for small deck ships will make littoral operations considerably safer for naval forces. In the near future, therefore, the CH-60S 'Knight Hawk' fleet of combat support helicopters will most likely provide organic AMCM. A number of AMCM systems that are already in various stages of development will enable these helicopters to detect and destroy free- floating, moored and bottom-laid mines. These include the Airborne Laser Mine Detection System, Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System, AQS-20X sonar, Airborne Mine Neutralization System and Organic Airborne and Surface Influence Sweep system.

Jam tomorrow

Article Abstract:

Integrated ECM systems possessing directional jammers are currently seen as important for US and UK helicopter systems. These systems send out a narrow infra-red or an even narrower laser beam, or both at incoming missiles. The beam from an IR jamming lamp is modulated in patterns, anchored on information regarding threat missile characteristics, intended to guide the missile seeker away from its target. Two laser systems, the AN/ALQ-212 Advanced Threat Infra-red Countermeasures (ATIRCM) and the AN/AAR 57 Common Missile Warning System (CMWS) are currently under development.

More than just DIRCM

Article Abstract:

Directional infra-red countermeasure (DIRCM) systems, which offers the best protection for helicopters and other aircraft against surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), are expected to evolve into a multi-functional equipment. The idea, suggested by Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems, is to make DIRCM systems more accessible to all types of aircraft by making them perform other functions aside from deflecting SAMs. These could include uses in pilotage, targeting and reconnaissance.
