Original drawings

Article Abstract:

The history of timber roof construction is shown in an exhibition of original drawings. A scarcity of materials necessitates a rather cursory coverage of the medieval period but the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue gives much information about the period when the ceiled roof and the king post were used in England by Wren, Inigo Jones and their contemporaries. Another significant change in design followed the 1820 publication of rules for calculating loadings and the development of the use of iron in roofs. The increasing importance of the engineer in roof design is chronicled in the more recent period.

Roof grandstand

Article Abstract:

The main part of the new Sussex grandstand at Goodwood racecourse is fairly conventional in design and construction, but the roof is much more unusual, being made of polyester reinforced PVC on braced-out tubular steel. It was designed by Arup Associates, and the polyester reinforced PVC, which was around half the price of Teflon coated glass fibre, is expected to last for around 15 years. The roofing subcontracting work was carried out by Koit, and this company will check the roof at around 12 month intervals during its lifespan.
