Taming the tiger

Article Abstract:

Leaders of North Korea's People's Army have become extremely influential in the country's politics as Kim Jong Il prepares to take over the state presidency on Sep 9, 1998. Kim Jong Il seems willing to allow the influence of the military to expand, but some observers fear that hardline military leaders could have a negative impact on efforts to resolve North Korea's economic problems. There is no immediate danger of a military coup, but it will only be possible to undertake economic reform if resources are taken away from the armed forces.

Raising the tone; violin maker shows Koreans can top a niche market

Article Abstract:

South Korean entrepreneur Shim Jae Yup heads Shimro Musical Instrument, now the world's largest manufacturer of medium-grade violins, cellos and basses. He initially capitalized on his experience as an overseas trader, which gave him connections and language skills, and on South Korea's low wages. As those rise he is moving more production elsewhere, but also selling more instruments at home. Shim claims a 25% share of the global market in medium- grade violins, and his export sales are rising 50% annually.
