Article Abstract:

US nuclear power plants are taking legal action against the Department of Energy (DoE) for not removing nuclear waste, a task the DoE was ordered to do by Congress. Senate Energy Committee head, Frank Murkowski, plans to dispose of the waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. There is concern that water could reach the waste canisters causing corrosion, though the government sees the site as safe. Other possible ways of dealing with nuclear waste include vitrification and reprocessing, which are not permitted under US law. Storage above ground until technology for dealing with the waste has advanced is another solution.

Dump and be damned: Taiwan and North Korea

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's state power company Taipower has contracted with North Korea to dump low grade nuclear waste there. While this is seen as just a commercial contract there are concerns about North Korea's involvement with anything resembling nuclear trade.
