Outlook good for beer sector

Article Abstract:

The 1997 economic slowdown in South Korea has negatively affected the country's beer industry with a 5% percent drop in shipments. The decrease of beer consumption by Koreans was caused by households' countdown in food expenses to cope with the financial crisis. The year 1999, however, looks brighter for the beer sector because South Korea's economy is slowly recovering. Hence, economic analysts believe that beer consumption will increase by 5% in 1999 and 7% in 2000.

Kia deal drives Hyundai, but doubt may stall shares

Article Abstract:

Sales of Hyundai Motor Company Ltd's shares increased following the carmaker's acquisition of Kia Motors Corp and sister company Asia Motors Company Inc. However, most market analysts believe that Hyundai must look for a foreign partner to help it manage the acquisition. Ford Motor Co is seen by the industry as the probable partner, as the US automaker holds a 9.4% interest in Kia and has also bid for the company.
