Competition and openness bring victory

Article Abstract:

The commercialization of the Chinese Football Association is credited for the recent success in the 2002 World Cup finals. The commercialization of the league focused on two key ingredients: marketing and sponsor money. An analogy between the Chinese Football Association and the country's entry into the World Trade Organization is made.

Most analysts agree that China should switch its pay-as-you-go pension system to fully funded individual accounts. Costs for the conversion can be paid for through privatization proceeds or sales of government bonds. Allowing individuals to control their own pension savings will be an attractive option to Chinese citizens.

Economic reform, relaxation of regulations and increased competition have helped transform the industry from a state monopoly to a publicly-shared entity with companies listed in New York and Hong Kong.
