Outside Gatt's door: quick entry is unlikely for China, Taiwan

Article Abstract:

China and Taiwan are seeking entry into the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Gatt). China's admission into the Gatt would represent an international recognition of its economic reforms but it could expose vulnerable local businesses and industries to foreign competition. China expects the US to support its re-entry bid despite several problems related to trade and non-trade barriers. The international community favors China's entry into Gatt prior to Taiwan. For Taiwan, Gatt membership would represent a major step in its attempts to establish an independent national identity.

The bottom line; Taiwan capital, factories pour into China

Article Abstract:

Investment by Taiwanese entrepreneurs in China is estimated to have touched the US$4 billion mark. In spite of the non-availability of direct air and shipping links, Taiwanese entrepreneurs are attracted to China because of the low production costs and the potential of a large market there. Faced with the prospect of Taiwanese companies shifting their manufacturing bases to China, the Taiwanese government is making studied efforts to monitor Taiwanese investment in China.

Asia's untamed business

Article Abstract:

Taiwan has begun to tighten the screws on the animal-smuggling industry as the US and Europe threaten boycotts and trade sanctions. Long the hub of the business, Taiwanese nationals were implicated in every rhino-poaching case South African police have prosecuted since 1989. Taiwan is now interested in entering GATT and other international bodies; the smuggling threatens its credibility. Environmental groups are cautiously optimistic about the new activity.
