Article Abstract:

FI Group founder-director Steve Shirley shares his views on a true corporate culture. For several years, Shirley used profit-sharing schemes, consultations and other measures to foster a feeling of partnership with his staff. However, these did not engender the expected dynamism, so in 1991, he executed a co-ownership plan, thus giving his staff a greater inlfuence on decision-making. Such empowerment changed the top-down corporate relationship to a bottom-up driven environment. Staff became more innovative and concerned about who and how the company was run. The strategy resulted in an increase in initiative and active employee support for policy changes. Shirley opines that management in the 1990s is now more a question of empowerment and the improvement of the quality of work and life of one's subordinates, rather than of their mere participation.

The European Commission: a new-found friend of business

Article Abstract:

In response to U.S. and Japanese competition, the European Economic Community (EEC) is reversing its long-held stance against international business enterprises by encouraging the growth of multinational companies within the boundaries of its jurisdiction. Various aspects of this policy reversal are discussed, such as the EEC social (or labor) policy change from favoring trade unions to ensuring that businesses have the trained labor force they require. EEC policy statements discussed include: the June 1985 white paper on internal markets in the EEC, the Gulf States petrochemical agreement of December 1985, the February 1985 agreement to provide sugar and starches at reduced prices to industrial purchasers (to foster biotech development), and various anti-import trade restrictions.
