PETROLEUM SECTOR - SUPPLY WILL OUTSTRIP DEMAND

Article Abstract:

The Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas ministry is expecting the petroleum supply to cross the demand by the end of the Ninth Plan period (1997-2002 AD). By the end of the Ninth Plan period, the supply is anticipated to be around 122 million tonnes while the demand is expected to be around 112 million tonnes. The excess situation is expected to continue into the Tenth Plan as the refining capacity is expected to rise to 170 million tonnes as compared to a demand of 156 million tonnes. During March 1998, India had 14 refineries having a capacity of 61.55 million tonnes per annum. Public sector contributed 57.40 million tonnes to the total capacity. Six refineries of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) account for 42 percent of the total crude refining capacity of 25.7 million tonnes. CapEx expects Reliance Petroleum to commence its refinery during 1999-2000 AD. The Numaligarh refinery is expected to start a three million tonnes refinery by March 2000 AD while the Mangalore refinery is expected to increase its refining capacity to nine million tonnes. (ag)

40% FALL SEEN IN POTATO OUTPUT IN HASSAN THIS YEAR

Article Abstract:

Hassan district in Karnataka is expected to record 35-40 percent fall in its potato crop in 1998. The fall is anticipated due to the decrease in the area under the crop and the delayed monsoon. During the current crop season, Hassan district is expected to produce just 1 lakh tonnes of potato (more than 3 lakh tonnes in the previous season). Low prices and marketing problems have resulted in a fall of 35-40 percent in the area under potato cultivation. Hassan district usually grows potato on about 30,000 hectares. (ag)
