POWER SCENARIO IN AP & GUJARAT

Andhra Pradesh has a total installed capacity of 6149.8 mw as on March 31, 1998. The Planning Commission has envisaged a capacity addition of 2,376.9 mw in Andhra Pradesh during the Ninth Plan (1997-2002) of which, 1,165 mw capacity addition will be by the state sector and 1,211.9 mw capacity addition will be by the private sector. The Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (APSEB) incurred net commercial losses of Rs503.4 crore in 1997- 98 (Rs938.9 crore in 1996-1997). Its rate of return has improved to -8.1 percent (-16.8 percent). During 1997-98, APSEB's rate of recovery of tariff was estimated at 86.2 percent (79.4 percent). The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) reported commercial loss of Rs1,270.04 crore in 1997-98 (Rs952 crore). It had a plant load factor of 5.6 percent at the end of 1997-98 (64.8 percent at the end of 1996-97). Its transmission and distribution losses has declined to 18 percent (18.16 percent). Its rate of return has declined to an estimated -27.4 percent (-22.9 percent). The total generating capacity of Gujarat utilities was 6,370.47 mw in 1997- 98 with 4,734.27 mw from the private sector and the rest from the public sector. (tsm)

VIP INDUSTRIES - A NEW CHANT

Article Abstract:

VIP Industries plans to launch a new Mantra series of moulded luggage in the next two months to achieve volume growth. The series is targeted at the lower end of the market and is likely to be priced in the Rs225 range. VIP is the largest company in the domestic moulded luggage industry. Its product portfolio includes Elanza (premium moulded luggage), Skybags (soft luggage) and Moderna (moulded furniture). VIP has invested Rs300 million in moulded furniture business and Rs120 million in technology. (uh)(vr)
