Panel charges audit exaggerated bank's financial woes: opposition calls Krung Thai report a whitewash amid renewed push for no-confidence debate

Article Abstract:

The Thai government-appointed panel investigating the Krung Thai Bank said that an earlier report by auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers exaggerated the bank's financial problems. However, opposition politicians claimed that the panel's report is a whitewash to cover up the bank's mismanagement. The bank was managed for seven years until Jan 1999 by the Thai Finance Minister's brother, Sirin Nimmanahaeminda. The five-man panel was headed by former central bank governor Kamchorb Sathirakul.
