The storm before the storm: financial markets have been reeling from Alan Greenspan's long-awaited interest-rate hike

Article Abstract:

Globespan

Article Abstract:

The US has raised interest rates by 0.25% and this has had little impact on stock prices so an additional rise is forecast for 1999. The possibility of another rise worries some investors in emerging markets. Asia is less reliant on short term borrowing from overseas, so less affected by US rate rises than previously. China and Hong Kong, however, could be affected since their currencies are pegged to the US dollar. Some countries in Latin America could also be affected and relaince on foreign capital is more important in Latin America.
