Party favored: voters give Goh a sweeping victory in poll

Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and his People's Action Party (PAP) won by a wide margin over the opposition in the country's Dec. 1996 elections. PAP took 81 of the 83 seats in Parliament, while Low Thia Khiang of the Workers Party and Chiam See Tong of the Singapore People's Party took the other two seats. Critics attribute Goh's victory to an aggressive campaign that focuses on housing improvements, construction of new buildings, and expansion of community services. The PAP also warned voters that their districts will lose out on community development projects when they support the opposition.

Singapore's decision to bar five firms from government contracts will stand

The Singaporean government has reaffirmed its decision to ban several multinational firms from government contracts because of their involvement in a recent corruption scandal. The local subsidiaries of Siemens AG, BICC PLC, Marubeni Corp., Tomen Corp. and Pirelli S.p.A. were implicated in the scandal after a former top official of the Singapore Public Utility Board was convicted of accepting bribes from a consultant to the companies. There is no evidence that the consultant acted on the companies' behalf and the Singapore government has not filed charges against them in court.

Lee, son say they received discounts on condo deals

Article Abstract:

Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his son, Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, have both admitted receiving discounts on four luxury condominium units they acquired from Hotel Properties Ltd. In the same statement, the Lees denied any wrongdoing, stressing that the transaction was legal and above board and that they never sought favors from the seller. Observers believe that the Lees' statement was made to preempt any effort to make a political issue out of the deal.
