Dengism after Deng

Article Abstract:

Some political forces in China have begun to reconsider the more pragmatic, less ideological economic policies originated by Deng Xiaoping, but it is generally accepted that economic freedoms are the necessary precursor to economic growth. In the 1960s, Deng dissented from Mao and asserted that improving economic conditions was more important than strict adherence to communism. Though economic development is benefiting some regions more than others, Dengism is clearly the road economic reformers are following.

Rule of law, not of rulers: a New Year's resolution for China

Article Abstract:

China's Communist Party is now being threatened by the two spawning grounds of democracy for China, namely, Taiwan and Hongkong. This threat is further aggravated by recent developments such as the collapse of communism, the new US administration's tough foreign policy toward China, the formation of the Overseas Chinese movement and the dispute with Hongkong. All these circumstances are tending to put pressure on China to at least have a legitimate rule of law and not of arbitrary rulers.
