Patrick O'Brian was a novelist who wrote about the sea. He was able to make historical periods come alive in his writings and specialized in tales about 19th century Britain. He was particularly interested in the impact of sea battles on history, and he used contemporary sources as part of the research for his novels. His novels did not initially sell well, and he lived in France because it was a cheap location. He was the son of a physician from England, though he represented himself as Irish.

Anthony Powell
Article Abstract:
Anthony Powell, author, was an admirer of Marcel Proust, and parallels have been drawn between his 'Dance to the Music of Time' and Proust's 'Remembrance of Things Past'. Powell's writing style had similarilties with that of Ernest Hemingway. He was an observer of the Engish upper class, and wrote about an aspect of society that he knew. He worked at a publishing company and may have resented other writers who appeared to have achieved success more easily than he did.
