Peace or war may follow, but politics starts local

Article Abstract:

Israel is to elect a new parliament in May 1999, and these elections will affect Israel's relations with the Middle East. Prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has been criticised on a number of counts, such as lack of honesty, yet he has still been reelected as leader of the Likud party. Labor leader, Ehud Barak, has set up alliances among Russians in Israel, and has a good chance of winning the election. The coalition that emerges after the election will be able to promote peace, unless there are serious problems and war becomes a possibility.

It's a scandal

Article Abstract:

Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, is considering an appeal to Israel's High Court over election financing allegations. Barak argues that he is innocent, and he sees political benefits from the appeal, which could help bolster popular support for him if the judgement is that he is innocent. A police investigation could weaken his position when he needs to focus on talks with Syria and possible negotiations with Palestinians. He is hoping thet the court will ask the police to end their inquiry.
