Article Abstract:

Recession is looming in Taiwan as the economy contracted 2.35% in the second quarter, and further contractions are expected for the third quarter, with the GDP likely to contract 0.37% this year. Problems have arisen due to the decrease in U.S. demand for electronic items, bad loans at domestic banks, and the scaling back of inventories at many of the island's companies.

Prospects of greater openness with China buoys market

Article Abstract:

Stocks in Taiwan have risen 3.9% following an economic advisory group recommendation to reduce regulations on trade and investments in China. After July's exports dropped 28% from last year and the technology industry was hit hard, more investment in China could help Taiwan reap the benefits of China's expected growth.
